Danny's Birthday Poem

Birthday

…And what is life but memory enfolded in a sigh?
“Spank me instead of Hedder.” “I don’t want to say good-bye.”

…And what are dreams but mountains that transcend the world we know,
And draw us to unsheltered paths where only we can go?

A tree too high, a rope too far, a lesson yet to learn,
Successes built on failure where it’s life itself you earn.

…And what’s a father but the one who, ever standing by,
Remembers bumps and bruises and a boy who would not cry?

…And what are birthdays but the feelings piled up day by day
That somehow we've not found the moment or the strength to say?

…And what is love but all of those who take us by the hand
And hold us always even when they do not understand?

Some day we’ll take life’s little parts and comprehend the sum.
For now, a happy birthday, son, and many more to come.

A slightly different version:

…And what is life but memory enfolded in a sigh?
“Spank me instead of Hedder.” “I don’t want to say good-bye.”

…And what are dreams but mountains that transcend the world we know,
And draw us to unsheltered paths where only we can go?

A tree too high, a rope too far, a lesson yet to learn,
Successes built on failure where it’s life itself you earn.

...And what's a father but the one who, proudly standing by,
Remembers breaks and bumps and one small boy who would not cry?

...And what's a birthday but the feelings piled up day by day
That we have never found the moment or the strength to say?

...And what are we but all of those who take us by the hand
And hold us always, even when they do not understand?

One day, we'll take life's little parts and comprehend the sum.
For now, a happy birthday, son and many more to come.
