Chad

July 17, 1985

Folks give their kids quaint names bizarre.
The kids must wonder who they are.
I must admit that I am glad,
For honest, solid names like Chad.

In England, they pronounce it chawed,
Which to my ear, at least, sounds odd.
A syllable down south they add:
It comes out something like chay-yad.

In Chad, the climate’s very torrid,
They spell it Tchad, which just looks horrid.
(Though last year down in Floridder
That pregnant chad was horrider.)

In Canada, we're plain as plaid.
We neither take away nor add.
Up here you're simply good old Chad.
It ain’t that quaint, but that ain’t bad.
