This was a birthday poem for Penelope's mother, Susan, on March 18.
Candles on a cake do not a birthday make—
Days and months, no measure of life’s pace.
The tally of the years is kisses, hugs and tears,
A giggle and a smile upon a face.
Blow the candles out but do not ever doubt
The reason that we celebrate today.
Then count the love before we do it all once more
Next birthday time ten hundred hugs away.
