Go Be Four

This is to Sarah from her Mom and Dad, in anticipation of her fourth birthday, coming up in a week and a half.

When you were one, you were wonderful fun.
You were one one no one will outdo.
When you were two, you were so two that you
To us two seemed too two to be true.

At three, we could see, you'd be the same too,
And if birthdays were some sort of race
You'd won to three, for three to one like you
Was as easy as jogging in place.

Now October 2 is coming and you
Will be thrilled to be through being three.
It's four to the fore, for four one day more
Than the year just before you will be.

Forge forcefully forward, go forth, be bold
For age four will afford no encore.
Forbear and forswear, my fair four-year-old.
Go above, go beyond, go be four.
