Walk Slowly Beside Me

Unbeknownst to me, this poem had been slipped into the program and Dad read it at the reception. Everyone was keeping me away from the programs. :)

Walk slowly beside me each step of the way,
Sweet child of my heart getting married today.
So happy, so smiling, so radiant---why
When my heart is so glad, does some part want to cry?

Walk slowly beside me---a teardrop, a smile,
We walk down a lifetime, not merely an aisle.
Down paths to a past under childhood blue skies
Where you rode on my shoulders, your hands on my eyes.

Walk slowly beside me. The aisle is not long---
A catch in the throat and a snatch of a song.
Were it but the length of my love, we could run
Past a thousand tomorrows and still not be done.

Walk slowly, dear Heather, it's time for good-bye.
Your future awaits and love shines in his eye.
Now kiss me and hug me, and stand at his side,
My beautiful daughter, his beautiful bride.
